Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi is an African Great Lake and the southernmost lake in the Great Rift Valley system of East Africa. This lake, the third largest in Africa and the eighth largest lake in the world, is located between Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is the second deepest lake in Africa, although its placid northern shore gives no hint of its depth. The lake's tropical waters are reportedly the habitat of more species of fish than those of any other body of freshwater on Earth, including more than 1000 species of cichlids.

Geography

Lake Malawi lies between 560 and 580 kilometres long, and about 75 kilometres wide at its widest point. The total surface area of this lake is about 29,600 square Mwaya Beach, Malawi.jpgkilometres (11,429 square miles). The lake has shorelines on western Mozambique, eastern Malawi, and southern Tanzania. The largest river flowing into this lake is the Ruhuhu River. This large freshwater lake has an outlet, which is the Shire River a tributary that flows into the very large Zambezi River. The lake is sometimes referred to as the Calendar lake because it spans approximately 365 miles from north to south and about 52 miles from east to west.

Lake Malawi lies in the Great Rift Valley that was formed by the opening of the East African Rift, where the African tectonic plate is being split into two pieces. This is called a divergent plate tectonics boundary. Lake Malawi is variously estimated at about 40,000 years old. or about one to two million years.

In addition, Lake Malawi  is located about 350 kilometres southeast of Lake Tanganyika, another of the huge lake of the Great Rift Valley.

European discovery and colonization

The Portuguese trader Candido José da Costa Cardosa was the first European to visit the lake in 1846. David Livingstone reached the lake in 1859, and naming it "Lake Nyasa". Much of the African region surrounding this lake was soon claimed by the British Empire and formed into the colony of Nyasaland. Although the Portuguese took control of the eastern shore of this lake, the island of Likoma was used as a mission station by the Universities' Mission to Central Africa, and as a result, Likoma and the nearby islet of Chizumulu were incorporated into Nyasaland rather than to Mozambique. Today, these islets form lacustrine exclaves: Malawian land surrounded by Mozambican waters.

On August 16, 1914, Lake Malawi was the scene of a brief naval battle when the British gunboat Guendolen, commanded by a Captain Rhoades, heard that World War I had broken out, and he received orders from the British Empire's high command to "sink, burn, or destroy" the German Empire's only gunboat on the lake, the Hermann von Wissmann, commanded by a Captain Berndt. Rhoades's crew located the Hermann von Wissmann in a bay near "Sphinxhaven", in German East African territorial waters. Guendolen disabled the German boat with a single cannon shot from a range of about 2,000 yards (1,800 m). This very brief gunboat conflict was hailed by The Times in England as the British Empire's first naval victory of World War I. Up until that time, the lakeshore that is now in Tanzania had been a part of German East Africa.

The borders of the Lake

The largest portion of the area of Lake is in Malawi. However, about a quarter of the areaA view of the lake from Likoma Island belongs to Mozambique. This area includes the waters surrounding the Malawian islets of Likoma and Chizumulu, which are this lake's only two inhabited islets. The islet of Likoma is dominated by a large stone and brick Anglican cathedral that was built by missionaries in the early 20th century. A notable feature of both islets is their significant number of baobab trees. The islets support a population of several thousand people, who in addition to being fishermen, grow plants such as cassavas, bananas, and mangoes for food.

Lake of Stars

'The Lake of Stars' is the nickname for Lake Malawi coined by David Livingstone. This name came about due to lights from the lanterns of the fisherman in Malawi on their boats, that resemble, from a distance, stars in the sky. The lake is also known as the Lake of Storms, for the unpredictable and extremely violent gales that sweep through the area.

The lake is a heaven for leisure as it offers all the beauty that one needs on earth. While at the lake, you will be treated to unfading beauty of Lake Malawi in places like:

Northern Malawi:

Karonga beaches, Nkhata-Bay beaches, Likoma Island and its immense historic archive of Anglican Missionaries, Chizumulu Islands. The beauty of Lake Malawi can further be complimented by hiking on the magnificent Nyika Plateau.

Central Malawi:

Places like Nkhotakota A beach at Chipoka, Malawi. Photo: ExpressGiantwith its vast Game reserve is a plus to any visitor who wants to sizzle out what happens when the game meets the lake. An impeccable wonder  of nature still rests calmly within the game reserve ready to be explored by an inquisitive mind.

Salima offers a broader view of the Lake and many holiday resorts or hotels are always available to offer the best services one would want along the lake. It is a gateway to Lilongwe and the Kamuzu International Airport.

Southern Malawi:

Mangochi is easily accessible from Lilongwe, Blantyre or Chileka International Airport. Several magnificent lodges lie along its beaches ready to accommodate  the visitor. A visit to Mangochi is never complete without Cape Maclear. Cape Maclear is renowned for its treat to snorkeling, diving and backpackers. It also exhibits Malawi’s many species of fish.

Liwonde Township is an ever blossoming force to reckon with as far as visiting isFishing in Shire River, Malawi. Photo: ExpressGiant concerned. Good lodges have been lined up and offer competitive services. Hippos, Crocs, Birds, Elephants and many more animals are easily spotted during the dry season from Liwonde National Park, a few kilometres from the lodges. All one needs to do to admire the beauty of Malawi’s game in Liwonde National Park is to hire a cruise in Malawi’s Shire river.

Have you ever been to Malawi? Yes. Ok, let me ask you again: Have you ever been to the Lake Malawi? No. Sorry, you have never been to Malawi yet.

Holiday Travel Coverage Guide Options

Author: Thomas Beringer

If you want to get the best value for your money then travel insurance comparison can help you choose among several insurance companies. There are a lot of companies that offer premiums over the other depending on the type of coverage you want or the insurance need that you require. If you read every fine print on each company's policy then expect to have a splitting headache afterwards and chances are you will end up choosing one of them because you got tired of reading the policy and listening to its agents.

In this case, travel insurance comparison matrices usually include items like theft and loss of valuables, medical assistance and evacuation, risks of flight cancellations or delays, emergencies and accidents, and the cost of attaining the insurance policy. Usually, these are covered by different types of policies with some that are able to offer other contingencies. The point is to identify what is it that you want to be insured and how much are you willing to shell out for it.

With regard to the different types of travel holiday insurance, these are medical travel, single trip or multitrip travel, business travel, and the comprehensive type. Through their specifications, you can tell them apart. Expect to be charged a higher fee when companies are willing to customize their insurance plans for you.

You can expect medical travel insurance to cover your medical and dental needs including the medicine and hospital bills when you get sick while you travel. Especially when you are going to some remote area where a medical facility is miles away, you should have this because you can fall ill and miss your return schedule. Not only will medical insurance cover you for the hospital or clinic that you prefer but also for the kind of medical access or equipment that you decided to use.

It is single trip insurance that is valid for only one vacation travel. When it comes to this, it is valid for one use but is already comprehensive and covers most of the risk factors mentioned and you can renew it. This is the policy that you need for your long awaited dream vacation.

The multitrip or annual type is the next level in the case of travel insurance comparison. An extension of the singletrip is what this is and regardless of how much you travel the coverage is good for one year. It is also renewable upon expiry which means that you have to pay again the premium cost which, mind you, increases every year to accommodate financial fluctuations such as inflation rate and tax.

If you take short trips quite often, business travel insurance is something you should consider. Here, a short trip is one that takes only three to four days. What is considered important here are the cruise or flight concerns because the travel schedule can easily be affected by any delays or cancellations.

When it comes to the inputs in the travel insurance comparison table, comprehensive policies cost the most. Not only can it be catered by a specific type of insurance policy but it can have provisions that you do not need. Choose a particular policy only when you are able to consider all your options first.

Get to know the different types of insurance available and then proceed to an appleistoapple comparison which is the next step. You need to give a higher rank to the medical coverage or any other risk factor that you want to be able to locate the best policy. So that you will end up with two of the best candidates to discuss with your agent, disregard those that did not meet your requirement.

When you use travel insurance comparison you will be able to find insurance policies quickly. People get insurance so that they could have peace of mind. If you want to enjoy your much needed vacation, take this into consideration.

As a person looking for best travel insurance you should visit that site. When you would like to get more information on travel insurance cancellation check out this site.

Menus with Spanish flair on Lufthansa flights

Lufthansa has retained the services of one of Europe’s most exciting and creative cookery talents for the airline’s Star Chefs programme: Michelin-starred Marc Fosh, the British master chef, has lived and worked on Majorca for 20 years. Aside from two renowned restaurants, he runs a cookery school with adjacent delicatessen and an exclusive catering service on the Balearic island in the Mediterranean. As the Lufthansa Star Chef, he will be offering his sophisticated, Spanish-inspired cuisine on long-haul flights in First and Business Class in November and December.

Starters served from an étagère in First Class range from salad of cod with oranges, black olives and sherry dressing to Cecina de Leon, grilled courgettes and shaved manchego cheese or mixed vegetable terrine on pine-nut vinaigrette with artichoke mousse. After salad or frothed watercress soup with croutons, the choice of main dish varies from braised cheek of beef garnished with olives and leek accompanied by mashed celery to saffron-crusted halibut with sauce bouillabaisse, bell pepper and black Venus rice or tian of eggplant, couscous and tomatoes with Mediterranean vegetables. As a mouth-watering finale, the dessert consists of truffle cream of chocolate and olive oil with fleur de sel, raspberry and bell pepper jelly or cream of lemon salt with cherry and rosewater sorbet and Ducca hazelnuts. Zomba: A Haven of Tourism

For an inquisitive mind taking a stroll down town in Zomba, easily distinguishes the delicacy that separates the old and the new. Zomba is rich in History but faces the danger of erasing the historical pride it treks on due to lack of renovations on historical structures. I must admit, it was love at first sight when I had just come out of my 4 X 4 to clip_image002breathe the fresh air that engulfs the town of Zomba.  For sure, my trip in this ‘Warm heart of Africa’ would have been incomplete if Zomba was not part of the priority places in my diary. I spent a night at Hotel Masongola.

Hotel Masongola, formerly known as Government Hostels digs its history to 1886 when its foundations were laid down the beautiful Zomba Mountain. Historical accounts available from people within the town indicate that the Hotel was used as a residence for colonialists before Malawi became independent. It protrudes beautifully amongst the tall green tress down Mountain as if to remind patrons of a forgotten historical entry of its existence.

The Hotel boasts of 50+ rooms designed not to run away from the imperial design as if to continue recording the historical adventures it has so far gone through. Thanks to the present authorities who have tried over the years to add value to the buildings without changing the historical face. Among the facilities available at the Hotel are: restaurant, bar, front office, kitchen, launderette, staff quarters, flats and conference rooms.

My stay at the Hotel was full of interesting things like sightseeing around town at the curios market, Old Parliament building, Zomba Mountain where lake Chilwa is another beauty that makes Malawi a dear to all tourists in this part of Africa. The tranquility and shining of the lake is a plus to the many resources that remain undiscovered in this small town of the southern province of Malawi but, compliments well with the beautiful green gardens within the hotel.

The climax of my stay was when I was served with the local dish of Chambo Fish. It was a mouth-watering moment that kept my mind recalling every bit of my stay in Zomba. Above all, I can’t forget the Warm hospitality from Malawians.

Languages spoken in the area include: English, Chichewa, Yao and Lomwe.

Kuchawe: The Tourists’ Paradise

Zomba was formerly the capital city of Malawi and still exhibits the opulence of the colonial structures that still survive the onslaught commenced by the modern structures. A stroll down town or out of the main centre of town indicates how rich Zomba is in terms of historical structures. It was recently upgraded to City and few developments are taking place in order to give a new face to the once abandoned town. Among the notable old buildings in the city are the then Parliament building which now houses the High Court and the Government Press.

Gardens Outside the Hotel Well, my trip around Zomba city took me to another level when I met some two young guys who had some knowledge of tourist attraction centres in the city. Unfortunately, they had rich information to share about the beauty that makes Zomba a city to remember but, they lacked the resources to enjoy the beauty that lied within their own city. I finally took the road that led me to Sunbird Kuchawe up the mountain. I was in the company of my two friends from South Africa, One from US and Uganda respectively. The tranquillity that greeted us as we pushed our Hardbody was enough to anticipate the good things ahead of us.

I must admit my love for the mountain started right at the dam which is some few kilometres away from Sunbird Kuchawe. The Dam is a magnificent place for a stop-over. We proceeded on the meandering road up the mountain to our last destination.

Maginificent View of Sunbird Kuchawe Perched on the edge of the 900 metre high Zomba plateau, Sunbird Kuchawe exposes the prowess that conquers the hearts of tourists on the tranquil forest reserve. The warm welcome from hotel staff, cool air, morning mist, freshness magnificent views, superb breakfast and nice beds characterize the beauty of the hotel. Some of the activities available are horseback riding, mountain and garden views just to mention a few. Sitting on the balcony through the green gardens around the premises is a plus on every tourist’s diary entry as entertainment refuses to die in the midst of welcome adventures from monkeys in the nearby trees.

The room setup brings the romantic feeling that captures the hearts of many tourists to call Malawi their second home. The hotel also has nice en-suite bathrooms with shower, phone service, DStv and a wonderful setup of a fireplace. The beauty up there is further complimented with view of Lake Chirwa emanating from the distance and the small waterfalls and rapids that weave attractively down to the Mulunguzi river further down on the southeastern part.

Hippo. Curios sold outside Hotel Mode of transport is through taxis but it is recommended to have your own vehicle. Air transport is only available between Malawi’s major cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Karonga. It takes only one and half hours to drive from Chileka Airport in Blantyre to Sunbird Kuchawe and four to five hours from Lilongwe. I will not forget the warm heart of the people of Malawi and the hospitality at the Hotel. Coming back is another entry in my diary. Zikomo Malawi!
