How do Business Phone Systems Work?

By Adriana Noton

Whether you’re running a company or you’re one in a thousand cubicle workers, the phone system you use at work will be different than one from home. There are different functional requirements needed, and in recent years the technology underpinning even the most basic functions on business phones has changed.

New business phones no longer use traditional analogue dialing systems, the ones where you manually enter the number of the person you’re trying to call (or the auto-dial does the same). Replacing these is Voice Over IP (VOIP), which in a nutshell is the ability to send voice messages from one user to another by way of an internet connection. It works the same way online music does: a sound is recorded on a microphone and converted into a digital form on the soundcard. A coder/decoder (CODEC) on a standard PC computer with microphones, headset, a soundcard and an internet connection is all that’s needed.

It facilitates several other means of communication: it does video calls, video conferencing, instant messaging, and several other various features only conceivable utilizing the power of the internet. As well, because it’s using internet technology,
long distance, and even local calling, can be significantly less expensive. Nobody likes to be counting the time they spend on the phone. This type of connection allows you to talk with impunity and be unconcerned with the ticking minutes. This is one example where spending money in the right way off the bat can lead to substantial savings down the road.

As well, new cordless technology called Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony (DECT) is gradually being used around the world.  Basically, it is a reliable cordless platform that is interoperable—it works with traditional analogue systems, new digital and data phone networks, mobile phone networks, and others. As well, it works even with different manufacturers. For business users, the best systems have a wireless handset option and presence indication built in.

Advanced business phones also adopt the surrounding technologies like high resolution touch screens, blue tooth connectivity, and USB and Ethernet ports. Like building a computer, the price depends on your unique configuration. Options exist such as choosing the number of line displays, how many programmable soft keys you want, and whether you want a blue tooth connection. The other thing to take into account, of course, is the size of your company and the expected size it will reach; you want a system that is appropriate for today and
tomorrow.

Buying a business phone with the latest technology will be useful for years. Many older technologies aren’t compatible with the newest systems, and if you want to keep everybody in the loop you’ll need a system that can grow with your business.
Because the newer systems are interoperable you don’t have to worry as much about staying current, as you’ll be current for the foreseeable future. Having modern technology in the core of your phone system is an essential component of keeping your company on the cutting edge, and looked at this way, it’s a necessary and unavoidable investment.

Lawsuits Against Toyota Fail to Identify Electronic Defect

Toyota has argued that the multidistrict  lawsuit against it should be dismissed because the plaintiffs have never identified any actual defect in Toyota’s Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS-i).

“Toyota is confident that its cars provide safe, reliable transportation and that the plaintiffs have no credible claims of loss or defect,” said Cari K. Dawson, an attorney for Toyota.  “More than a year after filing their first complaint, plaintiffs have not identified a defect and are grasping at straws to make their case.  Although the plaintiffs have recently filed a new complaint that attempts to remedy deficiencies in their earlier claims, this new complaint offers no more support for their positions and contains a number of inaccuracies and mischaracterizations.”

According to the release, Toyota will have another opportunity to present its position in response to the plaintiff’s most recent amended complaint, filed last week.

“Toyota looks forward to the time when plaintiffs will finally be compelled to specify exactly what is defective in Toyota’s Electronic Throttle Control System,” Ms. Dawson said. “That will have to be backed up by scientifically reliable, admissible proof of a defect as opposed to the speculative statements of counsel at the pleadings stage.“

Throughout the period, Toyota has been making exhaustive technical investigations which also included services by third parties but found no evidence of any defect in Toyota’s Electronic Throttle Control System that could cause unintended acceleration. The release further says Toyota is confident that additional independent scientific investigations currently underway will further demonstrate the safety of its vehicles.

Sony in worldwide Humanitarian research projects

Sony Electronics announced that its VAIO® computers now come equipped with IBM’s World Community Grid software which aims at helping scientists around the globe with the computing power to help solve humankind’s biggest challenges. This means that all fall line-up of Sony VAIO® PCs (excluding laptops with Intel® Atom processors) will come equipped with World Community Grid software that users can opt to run.

The software will connect VAIO users with World Community Grid, a network of PCs which pools their surplus processing power to create a free, virtual supercomputer for researchers to tap.  The program was design among other things, to detect idle time in a volunteer's computer activity and requests work data for a specific project from World Community Grid’s server.  It then performs computations on this data, sends results back to the server, and requests more work.  Each computation performed and every PC added provide scientists with critical information that accelerates the pace of research.

“We are excited to partner with World Community Grid to further the development of life-changing solutions,” said Jamey Gottlieb, vice president, Business Development at Sony Electronics. “VAIO PC owners can support research projects that tackle global causes while the World Community Grid program runs during idle mode, getting work done while you are not working.”

Computer users who are interested in joining the Sony VAIO team on the World Community Grid effort can also register and download the software program from www.worldcommunitygrid.org/vaio.

Tim Kring and Nokia push boundaries of mobile entertainment with Conspiracy For Good

Heroes creator Tim Kring and the Ovi by Nokia-powered new social benefit entertainment pilot, Conspiracy For Good concluded successfully this past weekend with more than half a million downloads of CFG casual games and apps from Nokia's Ovi Store, over 4,000 dedicated members joining the global movement online, enthusiastic attendance at the four live events in London, and huge support recorded from partner charities.

"The Conspiracy For Good has been two years in the making with Nokia," said Tim Kring, 2010 International Digital Emmy® Pioneer Award winner for transmedia storytelling. "We had a team of more than 130 experts working behind the scenes in five countries across three continents making sure that this was the best entertainment experience possible and to ensure the charity causes were the true heroes of this immersive story."

Partnerships with charities for CFG were uniquely interwoven into the narrative, taking actual roles within the story and creating a new way to reach potential supporters of their respective causes. The new approach created unprecedented interaction with the CFG communities and will result in 50 scholarships being provided for young women in Africa as well as the establishment of five children's libraries in Zambia in association with Room to Read. These libraries will be stocked with more than 10,000 donated books in association with the Pearson Foundation. These highlights join many other worthy causes that were supported by the CFG movement.

The first of its kind, this project used the extensive reach of Nokia's Ovi platform with online and physical participants joining CFG from more than 165 countries and enjoying a variety of Ovi content, apps and services.

"This is the most comprehensive Ovi offering to date integrating almost every service to help advance the story," said Tero Ojanpera, executive vice president, Nokia. "A specially developed app using Nokia's Point & Find, called Conspiracy For Good: DeadDrop, created a new dimension for augmented reality and opens the door for content owners anywhere to use participatory entertainment powered by Ovi to extend their brands."

The Conspiracy For Good pilot titled "Read the Signs" focused on literacy as the social cause. The fictional narrative followed the actions of a schoolteacher, Nadirah X, CFG spokesperson Ann Marie Calhoun, and the underground resistance movement, Spira. The movement, which dates to the 2nd century, recruited members of the public to help Nadirah X and Ann Marie in their task to bring down evil corporation Blackwell Briggs before it could install an oil pipeline and destroy a Zambian school and library. Online and real-world game play also raised awareness and generated donations for partner charities including Kids Company, Doctors of the World, READ International, Room to Read and the Pearson Foundation who partnered with Nokia to provide resources to schoolgirls in Chataika village in Zambia.

CFG participants, fans, charities and doers of good deeds around the globe are invited to stay tuned for clues about the next episode.

HP CEO Mark Hurd Resigns; CFO Cathie Lesjak Appointed Interim CEO

Mark Hurd, HP’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President has resigned his positions with immediate effect. Meanwhile, the Board has appointed CFO Cathie Lesjak, 51, as CEO on an interim basis. Lesjak is a 24-year veteran of the company who has served as HP’s CFO and as a member of the company’s Executive Council since January 2007. Lesjak will among other duties, oversee all company financial matters and will retain her CFO responsibilities during the interim period.

Hurd’s decision was made following an investigation by outside legal counsel and the General Counsel’s Office, overseen by the Board, of the facts and circumstances surrounding a claim of sexual harassment against Hurd and HP by a former contractor to HP. The investigation determined there was no violation of HP’s sexual harassment policy, but did find violations of HP’s Standards of Business Conduct.

A Search Committee of the Board of Directors has been set up comprising Marc L. Andreessen, Lawrence T. Babbio, Jr., John H. Hammergren, and Joel Z. Hyatt, to oversee the process for the identification and selection of a new CEO and Board Chair. Candidates from both inside and outside the company will be considered. The selection of a new chairman will occur in conjunction with the CEO decision. The statement further says HP’s lead independent director, Robert Ryan, will continue in that position.

Hurd said: “As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career. After a number of discussions with members of the board, I will move aside and the board will search for new leadership. This is a painful decision for me to make after five years at HP, but I believe it would be difficult for me to continue as an effective leader at HP and I believe this is the only decision the board and I could make at this time. I want to stress that this in no way reflects on the operating performance or financial integrity of HP.”

“The corporation is exceptionally well positioned strategically,” Hurd continued. “HP has an extremely talented executive team supported by a dedicated and customer focused work force. I expect that the company will continue to be successful in the future.”

The Difference Between Proof and Interpretation

By Jane Sumerset

Can you distinguish between writing with mere proof and writing base on your interpretation?

Honestly, proof and interpretation do have a bigger difference when it comes into writing. As a writer, you need to be aware of these two types of writing styles that you will apply in your content.

Although both of these are very useful and unique in their own ways, being a writer, you have to be aware of their meaning and uses.

Whatever is your purpose in writing, you can either use one of them or both. Depending on how you are going to describe your content to the public.

When you write with plain proof, it always shows a distinctive truth in your statements and you always stick to the real information that you gather. This is not base on what you think but writing with proof always provides official evidence to support your writing.

Some evidence prove a point. Others merely support it. Drawing that distinction is very important, as plenty of students make the mistake of assigning one to the other, leaving their arguments cracking before it even gets a chance of convincing the reader.

Proof is undeniable. When you quote how many died during wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, then it’s easy proof that war destroys lives. However, it doesn’t prove that the results of wars are entirely negative. While it does suggest it, there are too many facets required to draw that conclusion.

Writing though your own interpretation is another thing. This goes out to what you believe, what you have in mind or your point of views about the topic that you are writing.

However, interpretations can be right or wrong since different people do have different understanding and it can either be supported with evidence or not.

Most of the time, writing an interpretation is a result of providing personal statements or views about a certain fact, issue or truth. It normally provides every reader with deeper meaning for them to decide on what to react.

Suggestion is a mere interpretation. A data on the number who died in the wars can be interpreted to mean that these actions only lead to negative results. However, it can also be interpreted to mean that the wars were waged incorrectly and that, under the right circumstances, those casualties could have been prevented.

When you’re writing an essay and attempting to argue for a point, most of what you will do is interpreting information. The strength of your arguments is not the numbers itself, but the reasoning behind your interpretations. If they’re logical and well laid out, then you could make a convincing case for your main thesis.

The strength of your reasoning is actually what’s being graded in your essays for school, not the facts you were able to collate. Of course, your actual writing ability will have a bearing on it (you can’t argue well if you can’t be understood), so always use a good proofreading software to help clean up your text.

Letter to Apple about the iPhone 4

Dear iPhone users 4

The launch of the iPhone 4 was the launch of the most successful product in Apple's history. The iPhone 4 was considered by critics worldwide as the best smartphone ever created and users have told us how much they appreciated it. Therefore we were surprised to read reports indicating problems of reception and we immediately decided to investigate this matter. Here's what we learned.

To begin, simply take a mobile phone in a certain way is likely to reduce the reception of one or more bars. This applies to the iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, as well as many phones Droid, Nokia and RIM. But some users have reported that the iPhone 4 lost up to 4 or 5 bars when he was given by covering the thin black band located in the lower left corner of the metal strip. This decrease is much larger than normal and, therefore, some have accused the iPhone 4 to present a design flaw in the antenna.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users indicating that the reception of the iPhone 4 is better than the iPhone 3G. They say they are delighted. And it confirms our own experience and our tests. So why all this?

We have discovered the cause of this significant loss of rods: it is both simple and surprising.

During our investigation, we realized with horror that the formula we use to calculate the number of bars of signal strength to be displayed is completely wrong. In many cases, our formula incorrectly displays two bars longer than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we show four bars, so that sometimes we should display in two. It is very likely that users noting a decline of more bars when they hold their iPhone in a sense, is indeed located in an area of weak signal strength, but they are unaware because we wrongly displaying four or five bars. The decrease in the number of bars, therefore, comes from the fact that the number of bars displayed at the start is not realistic.

To remedy this, we are adopting the formula recommended recently by AT & T to calculate the number of bars to display for a given signal strength. The intensity of the signal remains the same, but the bars of the iPhone will now report a much more accurate, which will provide users a much better indication of the level of reception they will receive in a given location. We will also enlarge slightly bars 1, 2 and 3, to make them more visible.

We publish in a few weeks a free software update that will integrate the formula and corrected. Because this error is present since the first iPhone, this software update will be available for the iPhone 3G and 3G.

We went back to the lab and have everything re-tested. The results are identical: the wireless performance of the iPhone 4 are the best we have ever issued. For the vast majority of users who have not been bothered by this problem, this software update will only make the display more accurate bars. To all those who have been affected, we extend our apologies for any inconvenience this problem has caused.

Reminder: If you are not completely satisfied, you can return your iPhone not damaged in any Apple Store or return it to the Apple Store online within 30 days from the date of purchase and benefit from a full refund.

We hope you enjoy as much as we iPhone 4.

We appreciate your patience and your support.
