Wireless Internet Security

Have you ever broken into somebody's bedroom and got some information without his knowledge, taking advantage of his security loopholes? Well, if yes, that act in computer terms would mean hacking. Hacking is simply accessing somebody's computer or network by taking advantage of the security loopholes.

Hackers' main interest is to get hold of your vital information, stealing it and/or installing malicious software on your system without your consent.

Another way which creates loopholes for hackers to get access to your system is through unsecured wireless internet connection. Most wireless routers use simple passwords and encryption methods. By default, most routers use passwords such as admin or administrator which makes it easy for hackers or intruders to access or hijack your data or have access to your network.

The following are suggested ways of securing your wireless internet connection:
  • Change the admin or administrator password
  • Use strong passwords preferrably, alphanumeric if your device supports it.
  • Frequently change your password.
  • Avoid passwords which can easily be guessed such as your first name.
  • Turn off Service Set Identifier (SSD) in order to stop your router from announcing its presence.
  • Use encryption such as WPA as opposed to WEP.
  • Rename your router if possible.
  • Turn on your router's firewall if possible.
Don't compromise the security of your computer or network. The more protection you provide to your computer or network, the more secure your data becomes.
