Software is a set of written instructions which a computer follows in the execution of its tasks. Software programs are written by Computer programmers and installed on your computer for specific tasks.
Operating System Software:
Operating System Software automatically loads and executes when the computer is turned on. In other words, Operating system acts as an interface between human and the system by controlling computer hardware and its usage. Examples of Operating System Software include Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98, Linux, Unix, Ms-Dos, OS/2 etc. Other programs associated with Operating System that have specific tasks such as Data transfer, copying of files, deletion of files and sorting are called utility programs.
Application Programs:
These are programs written by programmers for a specific utility group such as insurance companies, water and electricity boards. Such programs are written to accomplish specific needs of institutions.
Application Packages:
Application packages are part of software programs which can be bought from software vendors. Development of these software packages aims at addressing a wider range of users. Examples of such packages include Spreadsheets, Word Processors, DBMS etc.
